In 2006, Alexis Williams, one of our friends and students asked us to consider starting a program to serve those middle-class (working class) Americans, who were drowning in debt. We were not really convinced that it would be useful for monks to get into the business of consumer debt counseling, but Mr. Williams was right. The need existed and no one was reaching out to help these folks. Developed as a not-for-profit advocacy and information network, the People's Financial Network helps those who are struggling with debt, particularly those unable to meet their mortgages and those who cannot afford the minimum monthly credit card payments they face. In this uncertain economy, we've helped huundreds of families take advantage of government programs and legal options that reduce their credit card debt by as much as 50%, with no new out-of-pocket expenses, and our referral network can also help folks rebuild damaged credit, find a new affordable home and reduce mortgage payments by hundreds, even thousands of dollars.
