Karuna House grew out of several of our monks having met a family who are now in danger of losing their home and everything they own. The reason? Because an unethical funeral director took advantage of the fact that they were disabled and elderly, and swindled them into signing for a very expensive funderal for the gentleman's brother, who died unexpectedly. In their grief, they were told that the military would pay most of the bill, even though the funeral director knew better.

There family homestead had been passed down from generation-to-generation, and was built prior to the U.S. Revolutionary War. Over the past few years, the elderly couple, living below the Federal Poverty Level, were forced to allow the home to fall into dangerous disrepair. And now, with nothing more than their paltry disability pension, the funeral home placed a lean against the property, and they're about to fall into foreclosure.

We have an opportunity to save a piece of history, and use that property to provide a home, food and shelter for five to seven disabled people, and a foster home to more than 14 pets. They have agreed to provide the Order with the property, if we can secure the donations to partially restore the old log homestead, and expand it to provide affordable green housing for up to seven disabled persons.

This would give us an opportunity to get the Karuna House mission up and running. The total funds needed to restore the property is $185,000 U.S. Corporate sponsorships and donations would be gratefully received. The property would be self-sustaining from that point forward.

For more information about how you can help us turn this hardship into a property that will provide shelter and security to disabled persons for generations to come, contact our Development Office.
